Hi, I'm not sure what the issue is, but I have some suggestions. Snipped
from Ubuntu's web site: "The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 8.04 is
384MB of memory for desktop CDs, and 256MB for other installation methods.
(Note that some of your system's memory may be unavailable due to being used
for the graphics card.).
That being said, make sure you have enough memory to run the disk, if not,
maybe you can get an alternate install CD from the Ubuntu web site. It is a
text based installer and requires even less memory(i think).

Other than that, you could get the server version, install it, it is text
based.
Once it is installed, you just type in the terminal
uname -r
sudo apt-get install linux-image-{numbers from previous command}-generic
sudo reboot {upon reboot hit esc at the grub menu and select the generic
version}
sudo apt-get remove linux-image-{numbers from previous command}-server
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Once completed, you will have a fully functioning Ubuntu. I had to use this
method for an old laptop.

I'm not sure that is your answer, could be another issue, hardware or
otherwise, but the above is the first thing that comes to mind.
Also, if anyone else has a better solution, please speak up, it wouldn't
hurt me to learn something better.
