Sorry, I seem to have missed the obvious - was that REALLY the first 
line?  If so, no wonder update-grub doesn't work - you're missing ALL 
of the important lines.

My menu.lst is attached.  If you want to have the alternative boot 
stanzas, change "# alternative=false" to "# alternative=true"
