OK, so there's definitely no 2.6.27 :-(

What does this do:

$ sudo update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic
...

If you don't see that "Found kernel" line for 2.6.27, there's your 
problem (you don't actually have it installed).  If you _do_, then you 
should be able to immediately reboot into 2.6.27
