In this particular discussion, I think suggesting perl is not helpful,
as it won't address the actual problem at all. Perl will not report
"errors and types of errors" any better or worse than bash will.

If there is a native perl implementation of the rsync protocol it might
be worth a try, but if not, the OP should stick to his shell script
until he has something workable.
