/home/<user>/.gvfs causing problems for rsync

But if you then have problems it seems to me that the obvious thing to
do is read the manpage very carefully - at least for the options that
are likely to be causing the problem. And in this case the three most
obvious candidates were --delete, --delete-excluded and -r!
