Give kde4 a try now if you like eye candy. Things are a little different but not that much. Of course you know that you can log into either version of kde once both are installed. I've been using kde4 since I first installed it and haven't gone back to kde3.5.x except once or twice to check on menu differences. I think you might like it.
Sorry but the standard "Configure shortcuts" doesn't compute for me or I'd try it.  Anyway, removing Compiz and related software fixed it for me as suggested by the OP.
