Thanks for the assist, Mario. I looked in that directory and saw that
it had a dotfile but it indicated that the new nvidia driver was
installed. I then rebooted, got (temporarily) stuck in low-res mode
(pathetic) but found I needed to reinstall linux-restricted-modules,
and I also copied over again my old debian lenny xorg.conf, which was
all set up for me to run compiz (slow as mud on a Thunderbird). :)
Now I see:
dfox at newbox:~$ dpkg -l | grep nvidia
ii nvidia-glx-new 169.12+2.6.24.12-17.36
NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org 'new'

ii nvidia-kernel-2.6.24-16-generic
169.12-0ubuntu3+2.6.24-16.30 NVIDIA binary
kernel module for Linux 2.6.24
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu8
NVIDIA binary kernel module common files
ii nvidia-new-kernel-source 169.12+2.6.24.12-17.36
NVIDIA binary 'new' kernel module source
ii nvidia-settings 1.0+20080304-0ubuntu1
