Font preview app that doesn't suck?

Couldn't figure out how to point gnome-specimen at a font - it seems
only to list installed fonts.  Not the best option when your looking
at ~300 fonts of dubious origin.  For now I've just used "Down them
all" to suck them all down to disk and then run fontypython on the
directory...
