How are you installing the debs?

I've encountered no problems. I cd to the /DEBS directory via terminal and:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

BTW: there is an new M14 if you want to test the latest cutting edge -
find a mirror close to you and look for M14 in /developer, example:

ftp://openoffice.cs.utah.edu/pub/openoffice/developer
  ftp://openoffice.cs.utah.edu/pub/openoffice/developer/DEV300_m14
<ftp://openoffice.cs.utah.edu/pub/openoffice/developer/DEV300_m14/OOo-Dev_DEV300_m14_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz>

Installing should not interfere with your existing (U)OOo, but if you'd
rather install into a home directory see:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Run_OOo_versions_parallel
Follow the "Installing 3.* versions (three layer OpenOffice.org)"
instructions & substitute
OOo-Dev_DEV300_m7_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz with
OOo-Dev_DEV300_m14_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz
