Because some of us learn from history. If you want to make a convincing

or just copying someone else's example.

No, it's the sort of thing any number of text manipulation tools handle
well, especially diff and the revision control systems like cvs, svn,
etc. And the best user interface is always no user interface whenever
it is possible for the machine to do it correctly by itself.
