Well, silly, that's why I was asking.

I suppose the application of Darwinian economics would say that if they
can hold on to their position in the market with mediocre network
configurations, then it's not as bad as it's made out. If it were bad,
they'll disappear when they have a major system outage or lose important
data. Or worse, customer data.

Exactly :-) This is really a separate tangent from what I was previously
discussing, though.
