Release and Renew IP Address

Hello

I recently got a new DSL modem and am having a difficult time making the
final connection to the router.

Westell E90-610014-06 rev. C modem and linksys WRT 54G ver. 5. Centurytel
DSL.

I can do everything on Ubuntu via 192.168.1.1 but do not know what the
equivalent Ubuntu commands are for generating a new IP address.

ipconfig

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

I have looked around but have been unable to find a nice simple howto on
performing this operation.

Looking at man ifconfig just confuses me and what I have found on the forums
is not for the faint of heart. Nor do I really understand the whole
networking issue at that level of detail.

sudo ifconfig eth0 down
sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo dhclient eth0

I have already killed the modem a couple of times and it has taken several
long phone calls to Centurytel DSL technical support to get it working again
so I am really hesitant to be sudoing (is that a word?) without knowing what
I am doing. Anything else on the command line is not problem (worst case is
just install Ubuntu again which is minor) but this is my lifeline to the
outside world. Breaking that and I am suddenly deep in a cave with a dead
flashlight. I just want a nice simple one, two, three procedure. I can
learn more as I go along but at the moment whipping out XP seems to be the
best option because at least I know I am not going to destroy anything with
those three basic commands.

I will still have some problems to work through but this is a major sticking
point at the moment.

Thank you for any assistance you might be able to provide.
