Turns out that Seagate's taking a less-than-Linux-friendly stance of
late. One series of their hard disks (as I recall, it was a 500MB
drive) specifically did not play well with Linux...bit it played quite
nicely with MS Windows. Furthermore, their tech support people were
telling everyone that "our latest drives don't support Linux."
Worse, now their USB external drives come pre-formatted with NTFS! Talk
about Windows-only....
I stopped using Seagate drives then and there for that reason.
Can you try it with another brand of disk drive, just temporarily, to
see if things work?
