If authentication's not a big deal, then I assume everyone has access to
every Windows XP box as well.  If that's the case, then all a domain
really is, is a workgroup with centralized authentication.  You could
certainly stay a workgroup, and for your small network, that'll probably
work out just fine.  Just make Samba a file server in the workgroup.
