How to start plasma in KDE4-8.04 upgrade?

Hi,

My dell precision m6300 upgraded fine from 7.10 to 8.04.
Then I installed the kubuntu-kde4-desktop packages and chose KDE4
as the default desktop. The login manager did indeed change from kdm to
kdm-kde4. However, after logging in the desktop is the old KDE3
desktop, not "plasma" (or whatever it's called). How do I instruct
the computer to change to the new KDE4/plasma desktop?
