Grub Error 15 "File Not Found" with Kubuntu on a stick

Hi all,

I've been tearing my hair out while trying to get Kubuntu 8.04 to run
from a USB flash drive.

When the install is complete and I reboot, a Grub menu appears showing
the flash drive installation and those on my hard drive. When trying to
boot I get the error 15.

I have put the boot folder on its own partition as I understand that not
doing so can cause this type of problem.

The opening stanzas of menu.1st read as follows:

title        Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
root        (hd2,5)
kernel        /vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic
root=UUID=3154b860-2397-466a-a3ad-fcebf045ae97 ro quiet splash
initrd        /initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic
quiet

title Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (recovery mode)
root        (hd2,5)
kernel        /vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic
root=UUID=3154b860-2397-466a-a3ad-fcebf045ae97 ro single
initrd        /initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic

title        Ubuntu 8.04, memtest86+
root        (hd2,5)
kernel        /memtest86+.bin
quiet

When run from my hard drive (after inserting the flash drive and cding
to it) find /grub/menu.1st shows on (hd0,0) (hd1,4) and (hd2,5) which so
far as I can tell is what it should be. ( I have 2 hard drives both
containing linux installations).

Without the usb drive I can boot normally.

Any advice would be appreciated.
