I ran into that on an older intel machine. When the USB stick was in the
front USB port the machine had problem booting. Take out the stick and
the machine booted fine. Move the stick to the back USB port and the
machine would boot. Can't recall where exactly I found the answer, but
upgrading the bios eventually solve that problem for me.
