Hello Ubuntu 8.04 users
With installing Ubuntu 8.04-Beta, -RC and finally the LTS version ...
... I learnt that FF3 is too new to accept the installation of Foxmarks
2.00.45 !
Even with FF2 parallel to FF3 Foxmarks wasn't installable and causes an
-203 error !!
Working on different OS'es and systems in different locations ...
... access to Foxmarks is quite vital for my activities !!! :-|
I posted this under "Ubuntu 8.04 mit Firefox 3 != fatal combination !"
around April 10-14th and
also reported the bug to Mozilla's support !!
Finally best help came from Mario and NoOp on this list: Thanks to you
two ! ;-)
Their feedback helped me to get FF2 & Foxworks without removing
FF3b5. ;-D
Rawly, how I got it:
Well, completely reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04 from scratch on the same
system.
After some cosmetic changes and some crosschecks ...
... installed FF2 and its Gnome-parts with Synaptic.
Rebooted and cosmetic changes adding "3" to FF3's Application Internet
entry.
Then In FF3 I disabled "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.5" and restarted
again.
Next FF2 start was in terminal: firefox-2 -P
It contained one profile: default
Deleted the single existing profile INCLUDING its data
Created a new profile with using User ID as its name and closed
everything
Started FF2 from Applications/Internet and downloaded Foxmarks from
add-ons ...
... done & Foxmarks running now !!! ;-)
Well and admitted:
I did not exactly follow the instructions given. ;-)
Changed some sequences given for my own comfort, taste and security !
However:
As a Linux / Ubuntu greenhorn / newbie I hadn't been able to solve this
alone !!
So once again:
Thanks to Mario & NoOp and whoever contributed their concerns and ideas
to this thread. Cool support and team !!! ;-D
One more and last thought is regarding Ioannis' efforts to solve this:
It's appreciated too and primarily I was exactly on his path too ...
... completely erasing FF3 and getting along with FF2 alone until FF3
comes non-beta.
After erasing everything of FF3 and trying to get along with FF2 and its
Gnome stuff ...
... I had even more problems and reinstalled 8.04 LTS once more
completely.
One thing I didn't do at that time: The user profile stayed
untouched ...
... and that may have been the problem !? ;-|
At this point:
I really appreciate more the efforts to keep FF3 installed than
removed ! ;-)
Like this I am able to work with both to compare both the versions !!
Discovering pro's and contra's for better or perhaps for worse !?
Last not least:
Generally I find the subject description not correct !
It is NOT a migration ... it's more a downgrade or roll-back !?
With this feedback I am closing this topic for myself as closed.
Cheers, svobi
