Why doesn't GUI upgrade 6.06 LTS to 7.04 work?

It did not work.

It wanted to jump to 8.04 which is beta, and the install failed. I was
screwed. I could only get a recovered version to work enough to get me
to the command line. Gnome would not start, and x-windows would not
repair.

Fortunately I was able to reinstall 6.06 LTS and get back up and
running, but it cost me a day. And all I lost was the printer driver.

Moral of the story, do not upgrade unless you have to.
