nVidia Sound Cartd Woes

Mainboard: nVidia nForce2, soundcard AC-97 onboard.
Software: UBUNTU 7.10, moving as soon as I can to 8.04

Problem: no sound at all, no matter what options I select from the 
System menu.

Back in the day, I downloaded drivers from nVidia's site.  Now, their 
site says I should use 'intel8x0.c'.  The closest thing I can find with 
modprobe -l is 'snd-intel8x0'.  Siumply inserting that doesn1t seem to help.

When the driver came from nVidia, there was a release-notes with it that 
gave instructions for entries in modprobe.d.  Now I don't have that.

Please advise how I can get this darned thing singing.  Sad to say, 
throwing it through tthe window isn't an option.
