DNS Host - who is it?

Thanks, Ansgar. I've checked the following files between two of my Ubuntu portables (one works and the other doesn't, and both use the same DHCP server!)

hosts, resolve.conf, dhclient*, host.conf, hostname, hosts.allow, hosts.deny

Apart, obviously, from the local laptop's own name, the files are 
identical and reference the correct nameserver and search domain.

I don't recall having to set anything on the server last time I added a 
laptop, either.
