How to configure TV connected to laptop via vga or S-video?

Hi!

I have an Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L1300 and a Hitachi 32LD8A10(A)
flatscreen-tv. I've been able to connect the TV to the computer in
windows and get it to work at 1024x768 resolution but I haven't been
able to do so in ubuntu, the TV says "out of raneg" and shortly
thereafter the xorg.conf file seems to be corrupted as the monitor on
the laptop is reverted to 640x400 resolution and the graphics-card is
set to vga.

This usually takes a fair bit of work to correct (have now made a backup
 of the file which I restore and then reboot the X-server...

I've understood this isn't easy in linux (yet) but i would like to be
able to play back DVD movies on the 32" monitor without having to boot
over to windows to do so.
