USB Microphone

Try this:

- right click on the volume control icon in the top bar.
- choose 'open volume control'
- then do edit -> preferences
- see if the gain is listed in the list that comes up, and make sure its 
check box is checked.
- if it wasn't checked and you've just checked it, there should be a new 
control in the main window of the volume control app.
