kubuntu splash screen problems

Hi all,
I'm having a few problems with kubuntu boot splash screens. My laptop has a 
ATI Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600] video card, and my menu.lst 
grub file has the following entry:
kernel          /vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic 
root=UUID=8c8c1d2d-5752-48bd-b36b-794f4c44f98d ro quiet splash vga=788

Now, I've got the kubuntu-grub-splashimages package installed and when I boot 
the machine I see the grub menu but I cannot see the selection bar, that 
white bar that should emphasize the entry I'm selecting. Moreover, while the 
laptop is booting, the screen is black, I cannot see any splash screen. If I 
remove the splash option, then I can see kernel messages during boot, but I'd 
like to get the splash screen. Any idea? Of course, if I boot from a 
ubuntu/kubuntu cd I can see the splash screen....
