More possible Lenovo problems

Hi all,
am at present running linuxant trial modem driver, on 7.04, it connects OK
but constantly drops out at 5 minutes of connect. Line out is OK, am 
using it on
Desktop machine for this mail.

Have been trying to apt-get update, most frustrating  when it keeps 
dropping out partway.
My query,   -  is this caused by slow (14k trial speed) connection, or 
is this likely to happen when I purchase
the license for same and move up to 56k. Still no CDrom recognized, so 
am wondering about this laptop.

Any suggestions most greatfully received.
