Autogen HowTo...???

I am trying to compile compiz-0.7.2, from the install info, it says 
first one must use autogen.sh, then make & make install...

But when I try to use autogen.sh, it says command not found...???

My version of autogen is 5.9.1...

Can anyone explain to me how to use autogen...

I have looked at the man pages, but it doesn't make any since to me...
