Two issues here:
First of all, Steve meant "edit" in the general way, not as an
application name. As the actual command line I would suggest
gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
(using sudo can lead to problems with graphical applications, and gksudo
avoids this. "gedit" is the default Ubuntu/Gnome text editor with.
And second, I don't know why sudo didn't accept your password. Is
capslock on? Did you (correctly) use your normal user password?
