Newbie question: No network manager applet icon in top bar in Ubuntu 7.10...

You probably removed the "Notification Area".  Right-click your top
panel (or "taskbar") and choose "Add to panel..." then look in the list
for "Notification Area".  Add it back and see if that helps.
