I'm confused as to what the issue is. Please clarify.

Are you able to boot Ubuntu and then get stuck at the login prompt
because you don't remember your password?

When you say that you "saw GRUB", do you mean the GRUB menu or the
"grub>" prompt? If it's the menu, what items are listed on the menu?
