Installing new kernel over compiled one

The updater leaves old kernel images in place, but creates a new kernel
image plus the related /lib/modules/<version> directory tree.  I think
it sets the new kernel as the default at boot, but you can select your
old kernel manually or change the grub menu.lst to use your kernel by
default.
