audio error in VLC

I have no idea why you used sudo, but that's a separate issue...
I assume that your user is in the "cdrom" group? Check with the command:

groups

Mplayer always spits out the stuff above here, too - but it's
harmless...

Is the device actually /dev/scd0 ? For example, I have a cd-rw and a
dvd-rw device here - the dvd device is /dev/scd1 , the cd-rw is
device /dev/scd0 .

cdda://1 would be the first track on the disc. Do you get the same
result with, say, cdda://2 and so on?

I don't think this is related - for example, if this was a sound issue
I would expect mplayer to at least find the device and open the disc.
