audio error in VLC

I got a similar result:  :~$ sudo mplayer  -cache 500 -cdda speed=1 cdda://1
-cdrom-device  /dev/scd0
MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.2.3 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1400MHz (Family: 6, Model: 9, Stepping:
5)
CPUflags:  MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled with runtime CPU detection.
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory
Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote
control.

Playing cdda://1.
Can't open disc.
Failed to open cdda://1.

Also about 1/2 the time when I load Hardy I have no sound at all.  Other
times I have sound with some things and not others.  It's quite unreliable.
