I think it has to do with the audio server in Linux.  I don't know that 
much about the PulseAudio audio server in Ubuntu.  From what I 
understand its a rather new project.  I do believe in 7.10 which used 
ALSA, I believe, you did have audio support for multiple programs.

What I'd like to know is why does Ubuntu use a audio server which isn't 
that widely supported yet?
