I wonder if this is an MTU issue? Just a guess, but I have heard that
some routers have problems with MTU settings...

Perhaps try something like

sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492    

or lower ( even experiment with say, 576, although that is just for
testing purposes)

As I said, this is a pure guess - the symptoms somehow rang a bell.
Others may have saner advice, but it's worth an experiment, since you
can change it back easily to 1500 or whatever is currently showing as
MTU in the output of ifconfig on the Ubuntu install.
