well i got free86 from http://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.7.0/binaries/

i too am not at all sure which files it might have modified

i followed this link to do it http://www.xfree86.org/4.7.0/Install2.html#2

but as of now i only want to get my old gnome desktop back :(
