Er... Not really. If it could resolve the host name, but a router or  
destination address is dropping the ICMP packets, you wouldn't see the  
'unknown host' error message. Likely, you'd see something like this:

$ ping someserver.com
PING someserver.com (192.168.1.12) 56(84) bytes of data.

And then it would just hang while the packets are dropped.

My point was that you might see that 'unknown host' message as a  
result of not being able to communicate with the DNS servers, which  
could ultimately be caused by a number of connectivity issues.
