I see you said you got this fixed already - but I thought I'd point
out a clue you may have missed.
Ping returns different error messages depending on the problem.
In your case, it was DNS - because it couldn't figure out who to ping.
That's what the 'unknown host' message is trying to say.
If it was that it knew the host ip but couldn't get there, you might
get 'no route to host' etc.
Like many unix/linux programs, the error messages really are
meaningful - and a bit 'jargony'
Windows/Mac users often get into the habit of ignoring or glossing
over error message content, because they aren't useful or are
misleading. Unix/Linux is usually better in this regard in my
opinion..
