Two things you might try (backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file first!):

1. At the grub startup, select the recovery mode option. After it boots
it will give you 4 options, select the one that attempts to fix X
(xfix). When that completes select the resume to normal boot option.

That will attempt to fix/restore your video settings. Once into gdm, you
then should be able to select System|Preferences|Screen Resolution and
set to 1024x768.

2. If #1 doesn't work, then use displayconfig-gtk. Following that look
in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and see if your monitor has the proper
frequency settings:
http://www.eizo.com/support/discontinued/lcd/l360.asp
[H: 30 - 61 kHz, V: 50 - 85 Hz (up to 75 Hz at 1024 x 768 mode)]
Note: you won't see any settings following #1 above, so only check after
you use displayconfig-gtk.

You should see something like this:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "<monitorname>"
        Vendorname "<vendorname>"
        Modelname "<modelname>"
        Horizsync 30-61
        Vertrefresh 50-85
