Unable to mount a usb "stick" in ubuntu 8.04

Guys etc.

I have a usb multicard reader known to work with Debian and other
Linux machines as well as a 1gb camera card that I've been able to use
before to upload camera pictures (rather than use the camera usb
cable). When I plug the card into the reader, no notification comes up
that it detects a new device (and it used to be able to do this) but
apparently that functionality no longer works. Along the way, I see
that various deamons running the system have stopped or are no longer
working, so I restarted cupsd, syslogd, hal, and a few others.

I've tried various names for the usb "drive", such as sdf, sdg, sdd,
etc., none seem to work, all say there is no such device, or mount
says that the fs is not valid (should be fat32 or msdos, or some
variation on that.

If I 'strings /dev/sdg' I can get to the filesystem which looks like
there are JPG files on it - which is what is expected, but any attempt
to mount the disk fails.

Snippet from log:

So shouldn't sdg1 be the right device? But:

dfox at newbox:/var/log$ sudo mount /dev/sdg1 /media/cdrom0
mount: special device /dev/sdg1 does not exist

udev or whatever doesn't seem to want to create the special device node.

These are hard drives, I can see that:

dfox at newbox:/var/log$ ls -l /dev/sd[a-f][0-9]

I don't see any lines come up when I tail the syslog file (or
messages) if I unplug and plug back in the usb stick. So obviously
that part of the system is broken.

Any other ideas?
