After todays updates Open Office won't start.

I updated my fresh installs of Ubuntu today and OO runs on both just
fine.  Did you make any configuration changes prior to the update?
I'm not a Linux expert by a long shot but someone else might know what
happened.  Yes, reinstalling OO should fix the problem though.
