Derek,

I am going to try this. Anything to look out for? If this mucks me up,
I'll just build it from scratch. I was looking for the path of least
resistance and damage to the system in terms of user settings and files.

Gary,

The darn alternative CD boots up like a regular 8.04 CD. I see an
install option, but not an upgrade option. Or maybe I am seeing ( not
seeing ) things, so I will take another look tonight. When selecting
the install option it does switch to text mode. I thought there would
be a way to enter the following command; gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"
( found that here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading ). Maybe
that should be used as a boot option?

I can't believe that I am even whining. I had to re-compile the kernel
when I first tried Linux to get SCSI support. And graphics support was
almost non-existent. Even if I totally muck up the boxes, I have the
data backups, so I would only have to worry about a few settings. Yes,
I already tried a restore from the backups and they work.

thanks for the patience,
Michael
