getting an external monitor to work

Somewhere I found a suggestion to install xrandr and then grandr (graphical
interface).
Using system/preferences/screen resolution there's a button for detect
monitors. Doing that got the external monitor activated, at least that one
time (have not tried again).
Even when the ext is detected, dvd playbacks won't appear on the monitor,
but using grandr and selecting auto the playback appears.
Would your suggestion automate the whole thing?
Thanks for the reply!
