during boot kernel and its subsystems make some assumptions about your 
system, according information returned by bios program. Check this 
article: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Fix_Common_ACPI_Problems if you 
want to know how it could happen that in winxp everything works fine, 
but do not with linux.

I'm not sure that I understand you correctly. What kind of errors did 
you have and how had you fix them?

This is not "linux-way" to reinstall system all time when something goes 
wrong. It's better to discover the source of problem and fix it, if 
possible. =)

Compare your firmare version with latest on your manufacture's update 
site by hands. Usually, automatic update services do not check for it, 
they check only software stuff. (for example, mine hp update services 
didn't)
