Maybe I should have been more clear: experience shows that many of the
distribution-provided Tomcat packages are patched beyond recognition and
will cause problems eventually. That's why people on the Tomcat users
list are reluctant to provide help in those cases, since they don't know
whether they waste their time on a problem the poster wouldn't have if
he'd use an upstream version of Tomcat.
OTOH, I neither know nor care if the Tomcat package from the Ubuntu
repositories is among those practically unusable packages, since I have
never installed this one but am rather using a self-built version from
the tc6.0.x/trunk svn branch.

Good point!
Personally, I prefer splitting things up between /opt and /srv, though.
