I would agree with the aptitude approach. I have done that with Tomcat
and it seems to work fine. However, as the poster points out there are
reasons to go to the original source of the software. If you do that, I
would strongly recommend installing it under /usr/local, so it does not
conflict with any installed packages. It also makes OS upgrades much
simpler.
