Please help with access to windows shares and printers

I have a problem with my upgrade to 8.04.

I have an HP Pavilion Slimline with an AMD X2 processor and installed Ubuntu
7.1 when it first came out. It worked fine and, among other things,
recognized my home Windows Network right away - even when I simply booted
off the installation disk. This enabled me to run my linux box very nicely
with my spouse and kids machines. (I know I should convert them but they are
Windows heathens to their very core). In any case, I shared files via their
windows shares (no passwords, free and open for read and write) and used
their printers so I did not have to bother with a printer on my machine.

Then while messing with Applications/Add Remove I saw the opportunity to
upgrade to 8.04 which I immediately took advantage of. The installation went
very smoothly (as I expected). However, after the installation the
connection to the Windows Network stopped working. When I clicked on
Places/Network and double-clicked on Windows Network it showed MSHOME - but
my workgroup is called WORKGROUP on the windows network so when I
double-clicked on MSHOME I got nothing after a long wait. (No surprise
there.) I figured I just needed to change the global workgroup in smb.conf
and all would be well. I did that and after rebooting it seemed to work.
That is, when I then clicked on Places/Network it shows Windows Network and
an icon for every machine on my Windows network. However, when I double
click on the machine icons nothing shows. Even wierder, when I use the
System/Administration/Printing and browse for printers it finds the shared
printers but when I set them up they do not work.

I decided to go to the /var/log/samba directory and see what was up. Sure
enough, there was a log file for each of the windows machines. Here is a
sample for the machine called carolputer:

[2008/06/12 09:10:06, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_data(562)
write_data: write failure in writing to client 192.168.1.102. Error
Connection reset by peer
[2008/06/12 09:10:06, 0] lib/util_sock.c:send_smb(769)
Error writing 4 bytes to client. -1. (Connection reset by peer)

... repeated many times.

Similar messages for each other machine I tried to connect to.

OK, I thought, maybe something went wrong on install. So I downloaded the
8.04 install and put it on a DVD and booted to the DVD on this machine. Same
problem. In run from DVD mode it did not recognize my Windows shares and
showed MSHOME again. OK, I thought, maybe it is this machine. So I booted
from the DVD on another HP and it still did not recognize my Windows shares.
It did show WORKGROUP this time but it did not find the various Windows
machines or the shares. OK, I thought, maybe if I installed on that machine
the problem would get corrected. NOPE. Same problem.

Can anyone help me or direct me to a solution. Is there anything else you
would like to see or know to help me?
