I used to use KMail which works great on mailing lists, but I became
so inundated with SPAM on that POP email address that it has become
all but useless.. literally hundreds and hundreds of SPAM per day

Well.... the GMail SPAM filter traps virtually 100% of the SPAM that
email address receives. I use SpamAssassin and Bogofilter on my POP
email address, and combined they trap maybe half... if that of the
hundreds of messages per day. I have gone through the motions of
attempting to train the filter, but I didn't see much improvement -
granted I didn't spend much time with it... on the other hand I have
to do nothing at all to get GMail to trap SPAM... GMail is the easy
way out :-)
