It sort of makes sense. But it feels different after using Debian and
other traditional Linux machines for years. Still, one of the earlier
versions of mandrake that I tried (7.2 I think) had this bizarre idea
about autologging users on without passwords.

I had a preexisting /home and didn't have a problem making it go in
although it didn't work the first time. I just wanted to get something
installed on my new 64 bit box. Had I done a little bit more planning
I would have got lvm setup or at least a separated out /var. I did
partition for one in advance and I'm sure I told the installer to use
that partition.

Not sure about what you mean. Ubuntuized in what way? Other than the
packages having -ubuntu something in the package string?
