I had a similar problem a long time ago - try setting your screensaver
to blank(none) and see if it goes away. If so, look for any
screensavers installed that use 3D effects (eg, have "glx" in the
name).

Thanks for the tip, I set my screensaver to pipes and X has been stable
for over 36hrs.
