Thank you too, you gave me some kind of clue; as a result of your
comment, I decided to check again some packages... a search with the
Synaptic Search tool with the string "linux-generic" was enough: there
wasn't installed the linux-ubuntu-modules package for the current
kernel. That was the issue.
